Our take

Obsession is a restricted horror film in which a young man uses a supernatural trinket to make his crush love him, and the spell turns possessive and deadly. Expect sustained bloody violence including a face-smashing set piece, on-screen sex, brief graphic nudity, pervasive strong language, and suicide and self-harm scenes tied to the curse. The story frames magical coercion as a cautionary lesson, but the tone is disturbing rather than reassuring. Best reserved for mature horror fans who already handle R-rated psychological thrillers

Uplifting themes

The wish-gone-wrong arc warns that forcing love can destroy both people involved

Story (may spoil tone)

After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

Talk after watching

  • Bear gets exactly what he wished for — does making someone love you through magic count as consent, and what would healthy attraction look like instead?
  • Nikki's behavior escalates from flirtation to violence. Where could Bear have drawn a boundary before things turned lethal?
