Our take

Sovereign is an R-rated drama about a single father teaching his young son sovereign-citizen beliefs that reject government authority. The story opens after cop killings, includes gun talk, a tense standoff, repeated f-word outbursts, and a child drawn into dangerous ideology. Characters discuss killing and assault in ideological terms. Disturbing for viewers who want clear heroes; best for mature teens and adults ready for heavy civic and parental-responsibility themes

Uplifting themes

The story warns how extremist beliefs can trap families and harm children Joe questions his father, but Jerry's choices endanger the son he claims to protect

Story (may spoil tone)

Struggling single father Jerry indoctrinates his son Joe into the sovereign citizen movement, teaching him that laws are mere illusions and freedom is something you take. But, as Jerry’s ideology consumes them, they are set on a collision course with a police chief who has spent his life upholding the rules that Jerry has spent his tearing down.

Talk after watching

  • Jerry teaches Joe that laws are illusions. How do online movements influence real families?
  • The film shows ideology putting a child in harm's way. Who protects kids when adults reject authority?
