Our take

My Old Ass starts with an 18th-birthday mushroom trip that summons a 39-year-old future self. Expect wall-to-wall f-word language, cannabis, tequila talk, kissing, and frank teen sexual conversation. The lead is 18. Warm and funny more than crude-for-its-own-sake, still clearly R. Older teens and adults

Uplifting themes

Be present for the people in front of you, even if the future looks complicated Friends show up, and the older self tries to be kind even when she is annoying

Story (may spoil tone)

An 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self. But when Elliott’s "old ass" starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn't do, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what's becoming a transformative summer.

Talk after watching

  • If you could warn your younger self, what would you refuse to spoil?
  • Friends joke through big feelings. When is that care, and when is it avoidance?
