Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Movie 1993 76 min Animation, Crime, Mystery Last reviewed 12 Sep 2026
Official Rating PG ClearAge 10+ Quality ★★★☆☆

Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 10+ because gangsters are killed and the ghostly hunter is genuinely eerie. The animation does not make it a light Saturday cartoon

Our take

This is a serious animated Batman film, closer to a crime mystery than a kids' cartoon. A masked figure hunts gangsters, with guns, chases, talk of murder, an old romance, and graves. Fine for most kids 10 and up with a parent. Sensitive kids may find the ghostly hunter and the sad tone a lot

Uplifting themes

Batman refuses to kill, even when the city wants a killer caught He tries to protect people and keep a promise. He also shuts people out

Story (may spoil tone)

Andrea Beaumont leaves her father to return to Gotham, rekindling an old romance with Bruce Wayne. At the same time, a mysterious figure begins to hunt down Gotham's criminals, wrongly implicating Batman in the murders. Now on the run from the law, Batman must find and stop the culprit, while also navigating his relationship with Andrea.

Talk after watching

  • Why might someone want revenge instead of going to the police?
  • Can you love someone and still keep a huge secret from them?
