Our take

This is a long, dark crime origin, not a jokey Batman cartoon. A child sees his parents murdered. Later there are prison fights, guns, and a fear drug that makes people see nightmares. You will hear hell, damn, the s-word, and a-hole. Watch with a parent from 15. It is too heavy for most younger kids

Uplifting themes

The film keeps asking whether you fight crime without becoming cruel Mentors push the hero to protect people, not just punish them

Story (may spoil tone)

Driven by tragedy, billionaire Bruce Wayne dedicates his life to uncovering and defeating the corruption that plagues his home, Gotham City. Unable to work within the system, he instead creates a new identity, a symbol of fear for the criminal underworld - The Batman.

Talk after watching

  • The hero is built from fear and loss. What is the difference between justice and revenge?
  • A fear drug is used on a whole city. How do you help someone who is terrified?
