Our take

Before Never turns Peter Pan characters into a psychological crime story after Wendy escapes an attempted abduction. Frequent f-word language, murder talk, blood references, and a sinister seaside mood set a hard tone. Drinking, rum and whiskey, and a recovery-home drug called pixie dust sit in the adult world around Pan. Too dark and coarse for younger teens. Better for 14 and up with a parent who can unpack the fairy-tale corruption.

Uplifting themes

There is a thin thread about seeking truth after harm once the mystery tightens. It runs under heavy darkness, so do not expect a bright uplift. Investigators do try to protect Wendy when danger closes in around her. Adults around Pan, though, come across as deeply flawed and unreliable Investigators do try to protect Wendy when danger closes in around her. Story (may spoil tone)

When Wendy Darling escapes an attempted abduction, her family employs James and Smee to identify the attacker with the help of the only eyewitness: Peter Pan.

Memory trauma and hypnotherapy sit inside the investigation as characters dig for answers. Recovery-home tension also shapes how they talk about harm and healing
