Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 14 because the scares are relentless and the early loss of a young child hits hard, which lifts it above a typical M for sensitive viewers

Our take

A hushed, nerve-shredding monster thriller follows parents trying to keep their children alive by making no sound at all. The scares arrive often and hit hard, with sudden attacks, a terrifying creature, and a very young child lost early on that sets the grief going. There is blood and injury, but next to no swearing and nothing sexual. The sheer tension and that loss make it a tough watch for younger or sensitive kids.

Uplifting themes

At its core this is about a family shielding one another and refusing to give up, even when it costs them dearly. Sacrifice, courage, and staying together carry the whole story The parents are brave and selfless, and the children grow resourceful and learn to look out for one another. The deaf daughter especially proves capable and sits at the centre of the family's survival

Story (may spoil tone)

A family is forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.

The creatures strike fast and hard, and a few characters are snatched or killed the instant they make a sound. Injuries run to a nasty wound on a bare foot and some bloody aftermath. The attacks are short but genuinely shocking

The film is a wall of tension, built on silence, jump scares, and a monster that strikes without warning. Several stretches are flat-out frightening, and the fear barely eases once it starts. Younger viewers can find it overwhelming

Children are in danger for nearly the whole film, and the early loss of a young child is devastating. A deaf teen, a frightened boy, and a newborn all end up right in the creatures' path. This is the core of what makes it so tense

There is genuine blood here, including a bloodied foot after a nail wound and the mess left by creature attacks. Deaths do happen on screen, though the camera does not wallow in the detail

The family carries the weight of a lost child, and guilt and mourning sit beneath every hushed scene. The sorrow is handled with care, but it is a strong, sad thread that runs the whole way through
