Our take

Vixen: The Movie follows Mari McCabe, who lost her parents to greed and violence in Africa and now channels animal abilities through a family totem. There is fighting, kidnapping, and coarse language, including the b-word and p-word, plus a kidnapping plot that puts her in danger far from home. The origin is sincere about grief and standing up to corruption. We put this at 13, with a parent, because the origin trauma and the action sit in teen territory.

Uplifting themes

Refusing to become as cruel as the people who wrecked her family is the heart of it. Heritage, courage, and protecting others come through. It is a clear origin about choosing what to do with pain Mari is determined, loyal, and unwilling to sell out her family’s totem. She is still learning, which makes her a usable model for teens. Allies are mixed, so the film rewards her own judgment

Story (may spoil tone)

Originally from Africa, Mari McCabe grew up an orphan after her parents were killed by local greed, corruption and wanton violence. But Mari refuses to succumb to the terrors surrounding her. Inheriting her family's Anansi Totem, Mari can access the powers of animals - anything from the super-strength of a gorilla to the speed of a cheetah. As Vixen, she fights valiantly to protect the world from threats like those that claimed her family.

Mari fights corrupt men and super-powered threats, with punches, animal-powered hits, and talk of corpses. Her origin begins in lethal local violence. Combat is frequent enough for a teen action watch, without turning into a gore show

b-word, p-word, and similar bursts land in confrontations. It is noticeable without filling every scene. The voice is street-level teen-adult, not playground mild

A little adult attraction sits around Mari’s life in the city. Nothing explicit is the point of the film. It stays in the background of the origin

Kidnapping to Africa against her will and a “monster” she has to stop give real unease. The origin in parental murder adds a somber chill. It is tense adventure more than horror

Mari’s childhood is marked by her parents being killed, which the story returns to as motivation. The on-screen focus is the adult Mari, with that past as fuel. Still a parent-loss beat worth naming

Weapons and a line about taking something from a corpse sit in the conflict. Blood is limited. The threat of killing is part of the corruption she is fighting

Orphanhood after her parents’ murder is the engine of Mari’s whole identity. Grief sits under the action, not as one funeral scene. It is the reason she will not look away from violence done to her community

Talk after watching

  • Mari’s power comes from family heritage after a violent loss. What does it mean to use something sacred as a weapon for good?
  • People around her keep trying to take the necklace. How do you tell the difference between help and control?
