Our take

This 1940s Universal horror runs about an hour and leans on mood over gore. A silent mummy strangles his way through a small town while an ancient priest schemes, all shown in shadow with no blood, language, or sex. What may linger for younger kids is the creeping dread and an unusually bleak, grotesque ending. Teen monster-movie fans will find it mild, and it suits curious kids around 10 and up watching with a parent.

Uplifting themes

A young couple and a determined town try to stop the killings and protect one of their own. The hopeful notes are faint and the ending is bleak, but there is loyalty to talk about A few characters show courage and stand by the woman in danger. The models are thin and old-fashioned, yet decency and quick thinking are there to point out

  • The villain lets greed take over his mission. How does that change what happens to him?
  • This film ends on a darker note than most monster movies. How did that sit with you?
