This is Hammer's take on the mummy, longer and harsher than the 1940s Universal pictures. A revived mummy hunts an expedition and kills them one by one, with strangling, a fall, and a chemical attack that bring brief blood and real shocks. Language is limited to a muttered damn, and there is some social drinking but no sex or nudity. The sustained murders and grisly monster make it a harder watch than the earlier films, so we would keep it to around 12 and up, with a parent nearby.
Uplifting themes
The curse falls on those who plundered the tomb, so there is a rough lesson about greed and disturbing the dead. The message is slim and the tone grim, but it is there to discuss A few characters try to protect others and face the danger with some courage. They are lightly drawn, and the nastier figures get what the story thinks they deserve
Story (may spoil tone)
Archaeologists discover the final resting place of a boy king, removing the remains to be exhibited in a museum. By disturbing the sarcophagus they unleash the forces of darkness. The Mummy has returned to discharge a violent retribution on the defilers as the curse that surrounds the tomb begins to come true. One by one the explorers are murdered until one of them discovers the ancient words that have the power to reduce the brutal killer to particles of dust.

A towering, decayed mummy stalks and corners its victims, often lunging from the dark. The grisly make-up, the stalking and a shrieked chant to kill build real menace. Younger viewers may find the murders and the monster genuinely scary

The killings show more than the older films, with some blood on faces and a nasty chemical attack among the deaths. Bodies are found and the violence is staged for shock, though it stops short of graphic wounds

Talk after watching

- Hammer made its mummy bloodier than the older versions. Did the extra shocks add anything for you?
