Why our age differs

Official is G. We nudge up to 6 because the slapstick, go-kart crashes, and nonstop teasing land best once kids are past the toddler years. Nothing in it is unsafe for younger ones watching with a parent

Our take

This is a wholesome kids' comedy about a gang of mischievous youngsters, built on broad slapstick and a sweet puppy-love story. Alfalfa falls for Darla, and his he-man-woman-hating pals try to break them up, which drives all the gentle chaos. There is no real bad language, nothing scary, and only knockabout cartoon mishaps. We land at 7 and up, an easy warm watch with a little light teasing to chat about.

Uplifting themes

Under the mischief, the story is about friendship, loyalty, keeping your word, and learning that girls are not the enemy. Teamwork wins the big race in the end. There is a sweet lesson about growing up a little The kids are well-meaning troublemakers who come through for each other when it counts. They own up to their mistakes by the finish. Good-hearted, if more than a bit silly

Story (may spoil tone)

When nine-year-old Alfalfa falls for Darla, his "He-Man-Woman-Hating" friends attempt to sabotage their relationship.

The gang's antics bring plenty of slapstick, from go-kart crashes to a runaway fire-engine chase and some spray-gun chaos. It is broad physical comedy where nobody really gets hurt. Classic knockabout fun for little ones

The boys' club is dead set against girls and teases Alfalfa without mercy for his crush, which is the running joke. It is gentle, period-comic ribbing between friends. Parents might chat about the playful no-girls attitude

Talk after watching

  • The boys' club has a strict no-girls rule. Where do you think that idea comes from, and is it fair?
  • Alfalfa's friends try to sabotage him. What would being a good friend have looked like instead?
