Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 10+ because the decaying bride, the graves bursting open, and a murder story are a lot for young children

Our take

Corpse Bride is a musical stop-motion fable with humour, romance, and a world full of graves and animated corpses. Its bride was murdered, and some faces and skeletal figures may unsettle younger children. Wine appears at toasts and a party, while language is limited to mild words. We put it at around 10 and up, with a parent nearby for children easily spooked by its imagery.

Uplifting themes

Kindness still matters after death, and a promise is treated as sacred without trapping someone who wants to live. Friends in the underworld pull together. Letting go is framed as love Victor tries to be honest even when he is terrified, and Emily is generous when she could be bitter. Victoria has a quiet spine. The adults above ground are mostly snobs and cowards Arranged marriage, class, and what a vow is worth are all sitting there for a chat. Younger viewers get a folk-tale version of those ideas. It is a doorway, not a history class

Story (may spoil tone)

In a 19th-century European village, a young man about to be married is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious corpse bride, while his real bride waits bereft in the land of the living.

A young bride was murdered in the woods, and that crime is replayed as a grim little tale. The finale has a sword and a villain who is ready to kill again. It is stylised, and it is still a killing

A single damn slips out as a joke, and someone shouts about demons from hell. That is the lot for coarse language. Little kids may still copy the damn

Wedding kisses and talk of eloping sit in a story about arranged marriage. There is no sex scene and no nudity on screen. The romance stays sweet and old-fashioned

Wine is part of the wedding vows, and the land of the dead throws a lively feast with drinks in hand. People toast, they do not spiral. Parents of young children may still want a word about it

Skeletons rise from graves, the bride's body is visibly decayed, and a maggot lives in her eye. The underworld is colourful, but some faces may frighten sensitive children

Victoria's parents shove her toward a richer match and pick apart manners like a sport. The nagging is comic and cruel. Class snobbery is the joke and the hurt

Emily's decaying body and loose bones are used for visual jokes. There are no open wounds, but her corpse-like appearance may unsettle young viewers

Parents criticise a girl's hands as too fat and a boy's neck as too thin while arranging a marriage. The brief joke may still sting for children sensitive about their bodies

Victoria is told to sit at home in grief when she thinks her fiance is gone, and Emily carries a whole life that was stolen. The film is tender about unfinished love. It can leave a lump in the throat

Talk after watching

  • The land of the dead is louder and kinder than the living village. What did your child make of that flip?
  • Emily has to decide what a wedding vow is worth. How would your kid want that choice to go?
