Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16+ because the sex scene is strong, the dread runs long, and a late self-harm beat is too heavy for a lighter MA watch

Our take

Mulholland Drive is an unsettling Hollywood mystery built from desire, fractured memory, and surreal dread. A sex scene includes nudity, strong language appears in bursts, and violence, a corpse, and a later act of self-harm carry real weight. Its disturbing mood may linger more than its brief gore. We put it at 16 and up.

Uplifting themes

Friendship and kindness flicker early, when two strangers help each other in a strange city. The film is far more warning than uplift. Any hope feels fragile against Hollywood's sharper edges Betty starts bright, helpful, and loyal, which gives younger viewers someone to root for at first. Ambition and jealousy complicate that warmth. Models here are mixed and human, not tidy heroes Families who like film craft can talk about dreams, storytelling, and how Hollywood sells a fantasy of success. It rewards patience more than facts. Teens who enjoy puzzling movies will get the most from it

Story (may spoil tone)

Blonde Betty Elms has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia. Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman's identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project.

A bungled hit turns messy, and a body appears in a bedroom in a way that freezes the room. Threats and dark deals sit under the Hollywood shine. Impact is real, though the film rarely lingers on fight choreography

The f-word and s-word show up in frustration and fear, with hell, damn, and b-word in the mix. It comes in bursts, not as a constant stream. Talk still sounds adult and sharp

A long sex scene between two women includes nudity and clear sexual activity. Earlier kissing leads to it. This is explicit adult intimacy rather than a brief suggestion

Cigarettes get asked for and smoked in ordinary rooms, and drinks appear at parties and dinners. Nobody is chasing a high as the story. Adult Hollywood habits sit in the background

A diner nightmare, a ruined face behind a wall, and a late spiral of guilt create deep unease. Club Silencio and the Hollywood night feel wrong in a quiet way. Sensitive teens may feel haunted after the credits

Late despair leads to an act of self-harm shown on screen. It is brief but clear and emotionally heavy

A corpse is found in bed, and a botched shooting leaves blood and panic in a small apartment. Guns and the aftermath matter more than open wounds. Detail is enough to unsettle without turning into a gore show

Identity, jealousy, and reality become difficult to separate as the story shifts. The characters' distress is clear even though the film remains deliberately surreal

Loss and regret sit under the mystery, especially when love and careers fall apart. The film mourns in odd, sideways ways. Grief is a flavour of the puzzle, not a funeral story

Talk after watching

  • Parts of the story feel like a dream that will not settle. What did your teen think was real?
  • Fame and wanting to be seen drive a lot of the choices. How did that land for them?
