Why our age differs

Official is R 18+ 18+. We say 17+ because explicit sex, cocaine, and shootings still make this an adult watch, just shy of a hard R 18+.

Our take

Boogie Nights follows a teenager into the adult-film business as its party culture turns dangerous. Explicit sex and nudity, frequent f-words, cocaine, overdoses, and gun violence make it a firmly adult film. His home life also includes harsh sexual insults. ClearAge's editorial age is 17+, while the displayed official rating is R18+; follow the official restriction where it applies.

Uplifting themes

A found family tries to look after its own, and one producer keeps asking people to try again after a flop. Kindness exists inside a rough business. It does not cancel the harm Jack wants to make something he is proud of, and a few friends show up when Dirk is broke. Most adults still use the kids around them. Take the care, not the career advice Older viewers can talk about how a boom industry shifted when video arrived, and what happens when a workplace is also a party. It is fiction, not a trade lesson. The caution is the point

Story (may spoil tone)

In 1977, an idealistic porn producer and his promising protege try to catch up with the end of an era before their never-ending party collides with cold, hard reality.

A jealous husband uses a gun after a public betrayal, and a later house visit turns into a long armed standoff. People are shot at close range. The last stretch is much meaner than the party years

The f-word is everywhere, in sex scenes, family fights, and business talk. The s-word, b-word, and crude names for bodies sit in the same stream. It is aggressive and it barely pauses

Porn production is the setting, with full nudity and explicit sexual activity shown as work. Dialogue is frank about bodies and performance throughout

Cocaine and other drugs fuel the parties, and a woman overdoses on screen more than once. People drink hard as well. By the end, use looks messy rather than fun

Overdoses, a sudden shooting, and a paranoid house with guns create real dread. The tone flips from disco glow to panic. Those late scenes can sit with you afterwards

The adult-film workplace includes pressure and unequal power, while jealousy turns controlling and threatening. There is no separate graphic assault scene

Close-range gunshots leave people dead in a driveway and a living room. You see the aftermath more than medical gore. Weapons stay in frame through the last act

The hero's worth is tied to his body, and people talk about it constantly as a product. Fame rises and falls with that. It can feel grim about what a body is for

Paranoia, humiliation, and a crash after fame eat at several people. One friend is desperately in love and unwell with it. The party does not look fun by the last hour

People in the circle die, and the surviving 'family' has to keep working anyway. The film does not stage a long funeral. The absence is part of how cold the later years feel

Talk after watching

  • Dirk's value is treated as a body first. How would your teen spot a grown-up who only wants them for how they look?
  • The found family feels warm until the drugs and guns arrive. What should a young person do when a 'family' starts asking them to take risks?
