Why our age differs

Official is MA15+. We say 16+ because sexual assault is the engine of the story, not a side mention, and the club setups stay tense for teens

Our take

Promising Young Woman is an unsettling revenge thriller rooted in a friend's sexual assault while she was too drunk to consent. Cassie repeatedly enters situations where men use alcohol and pressure to pursue sex. Strong swearing and drinking are frequent, while threats and a weapon add danger without extended gore. We put it at around 16 and up, with a parent nearby for the consent and trauma themes.

Uplifting themes

The film is furious about how easily blame slides onto women. Friendship loyalty still shows through the darkness. It asks teens to notice bystander silence, not to cheer every choice Cassie makes Cassie is clever and driven, but her methods are risky and hard to endorse. A few people try to tell the truth when it costs them. Role models here are messy on purpose Consent, campus culture, and what people say after an assault are the real classroom. Families can unpack how alcohol gets used as an excuse. It is a conversation starter more than a lesson plan

Story (may spoil tone)

A young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path.

Threats, roadside panic, and a tire-iron moment land hard without turning into a long fight reel. Revenge hangs over every meetup. You feel the danger more in the setups than in gore

The f-word shows up early and keeps coming in clubs, cars, and arguments. You also hear the s-word, a-word, b-word, and sharper insults. It is adult talk from the first scene

Men talk about sex, kissing, and taking someone home while they think she cannot push back. There is romance and sexual banter later too. The film stays clothed, but the talk is adult and constant

Beer, vodka, and blackout drunk talk drive almost every night Cassie walks into. People debate whether a drunk woman can consent. Alcohol is the plot engine, not a side drink

The dread comes from how calm and ordinary the predatory chats sound. Late scenes lean into nightmare talk about accusation and assault. Sensitive teens may sit with that aftercare feeling

Cassie's friend was assaulted while too drunk to consent. Men also discuss sex with women who are unconscious or unwilling. The film emphasises the aftermath and confrontations rather than showing a graphic assault

Someone is described as threatened and bullied until a case was dropped. A throwaway line also flags a racist coworker. It is brief, but it shows how pressure silences people

A tire iron and sudden injury risk appear without a wound showcase. Death talk is pointed rather than medical. Parents will clock the weapon more than blood detail

Cassie's grief, anger, and numbness continue years after her friend's assault. The story does not present revenge as a simple recovery

Talk after watching

  • Cassie keeps putting herself in rooms with men who think she is too drunk to say no. What do you think she is trying to prove?
  • Friends and coworkers make excuses when someone is hurt. Where have you heard that kind of talk in real life?
