Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16+ because the child kidnapping is sustained, the swearing is wall-to-wall, and the kill-or-pay dilemma stays adult all the way through

Our take

Animals puts a couple under pressure when their son is kidnapped and a ransom clock starts running. Most of the danger comes through threats and frantic calls, with talk of killing and a brief reference to an attempted rape. The swearing is heavy, including the f-word and a c-word insult. We put it at around 16 and up because the child peril lasts through the story, and the parents' fear may hit close to home.

Uplifting themes

Under the thriller plot, the film asks what honesty costs in a marriage and a campaign when a child is at risk. Loyalty and facing ugly truths matter more than looking clean for voters The parents fight hard for their son, but they also lie, lash out, and weigh choices that would hurt other people. Courage sits next to compromise you may not want teens to copy You get a rough window into how money, politics, and media pressure collide in a crisis. It is drama first, not a how-to on ransom or campaigns

Story (may spoil tone)

When the son of an L.A. mayoral candidate is kidnapped, he and his wife have a few hours to come up with the ransom payment. With most of their money spent on his political campaign, they have to get their hands dirty and expose a side of their lives they never intended to see the light of day.

Phone threats to kill and rip someone apart land hard, and characters debate paying to have a person killed. A rifle without a serial number comes up in the legal talk. The menace is mostly tense dialogue and stakes, not a long shootout montage

The f-word is constant from the first act through the ransom calls. You also hear b-word, a-word, bull s-word, and a pointed c-word insult during a fight. It sounds like stressed adults under pressure, not teen slang sprinkled in

An affair with a coworker is confessed, and there is talk of sexual misconduct and crude remarks at work. A kiss lands later. Nothing turns into a sex scene, but the marriage secrets are adult and awkward

Frightening Moderate Halloween night, ransom calls, and a ticking clock around a missing chi…

Halloween night, ransom calls, and a ticking clock around a missing child keep the room tight. Nightmare and haunted-house talk sits next to real fear that the boy will be hurt. Jump scare style is light; dread from the kidnapping is the main scare

One line recalls shooting a man who was trying to rape a wife. It is spoken, not shown as an assault scene, but the word and the idea are clear

The whole story hangs on a boy's kidnapping and whether he survives the night. Parents hear threats about what will happen if they fail to pay, and they argue while the child is still missing. That peril is sustained, not a quick off-screen beat

A bitter argument includes a racist accusation and a c-word insult. The words are used to wound the other person in that moment
