Our take

My Brilliant Career follows Sybylla as she pushes back against the expectation that marriage should settle her future. Courtship, kisses, class snobbery, and family pressure do most of the work; the guide flags only mild swearing and social drinking. We put it at around 10 and up, with a parent nearby if a younger viewer wants help with the period setting and its expectations of women.

Uplifting themes

Independence, honesty, and choosing your own life over easy comfort shine through Sybylla's choices. Strong feminist coming-of-age theme Sybylla is flawed but brave, outspoken, and loyal to her ambitions. Good discussion figure for teens studying Australian literature Rich look at 1890s rural Australia, class, and Miles Franklin's world. Excellent companion to the novel in school units

Story (may spoil tone)

A young woman who is determined to maintain her independence finds herself at odds with her family who wants her to tame her wild side and get married.

  • Sybylla refuses an easy marriage. What would you sacrifice to follow a dream that your family does not understand?
  • How does the film show gender rules in the 1890s, and which ones still echo today?
