Our take

Dolores Claiborne moves between a death investigation and memories of domestic abuse. Mother and daughter argue harshly, suicide and murder are both discussed, and flashbacks include drunken rage and drug use. We put it at around 17 and up for the abuse, coercion, and difficult family history.

Uplifting themes

Truth and protecting each other win over silence, though the road is brutal Dolores is complicated yet fiercely protective. Selena learns to hear her mother's survival story Raises talks about domestic abuse and believing survivors if parents debrief carefully

Story (may spoil tone)

Dolores Claiborne was accused of killing her abusive husband twenty years ago, but the court's findings were inconclusive and she was allowed to walk free. Now she has been accused of killing her employer, Vera Donovan, and this time there is a witness who can place her at the scene of the crime. Things look bad for Dolores when her daughter Selena, a successful Manhattan magazine writer, returns to cover the story.
