Our take

Hell or High Water follows two brothers robbing banks while a lawman closes in. Shootouts leave people dead, and the film keeps the fear of hostages in view even when the brothers seem sympathetic. Strong swearing, drinking, casino visits, and pain-pill talk fill out the crime story. We put it at around MA 15+ and up for the gun violence and hard language.

Uplifting themes

Love for family and loyalty between brothers shine, yet crime is still glamorized The marshal shows patience and empathy; the robbers remain sympathetic antiheroes Older teens can debate foreclosure economics and how movies romanticize outlaws

Story (may spoil tone)

A divorced dad and his ex-con brother resort to a desperate scheme in order to save their family's farm in West Texas.

Talk after watching

  • The brothers say they rob for family. When does a sympathetic motive still mean real victims?
  • Marcus talks about legacy and change in Texas. What is the movie saying about debt, banks, and poverty?
