Our take

Looking for Alibrandi follows Josie through school snobbery, family questions, and meeting the father she has never known. Racist remarks and a school fight are upsetting, while a boy's suicide brings a much deeper grief into the story. The guide also flags kissing, party drinking, and mild swearing. We put it at around 13 and up, with a parent nearby to talk about the loss.

Uplifting themes

Josie grows into honesty about who she is and where she belongs, and the film values forgiveness across generations. The ending rewards empathy more than revenge Josie, her mother, and her grandmother are messy but loving guides through culture clash and pride. Even flawed adults show up for her by the finish Strong window into Australian migrant family life, Catholic school culture, and teen identity in the late 1990s. Good spark for talks about heritage and fairness

Story (may spoil tone)

Josie Alibrandi is 17 and doesn't know where she belongs. This year, however, everything is going to change. Josie will face her fears, uncover secrets, and even discover the true identity of her father.
