Our take

Sweet November begins as a playful romance and grows much sadder as the month goes on. There is adult sex talk, an implied love scene, some swearing and casual drinking, but the goodbye is likely to be what stays with a younger viewer. We would watch from 13.

Uplifting themes

The film encourages living in the moment, being kind, and slowing down. It also leans on a questionable idea that one person can fix another in a month Sara is generous and brave, and Nelson learns to care for people beyond work. Both make some selfish choices along the way

Story (may spoil tone)

Nelson is a man devoted to his advertising career in San Francisco. One day, while taking a driving test at the DMV, he meets Sara. She is very different from the other women in his life. Nelson causes her to miss out on taking the test and later that day she tracks him down. One thing leads to another and Nelson ends up living with her through a November that will change his life forever.

The last third turns to loss and goodbyes, and the mood becomes very sad. It is gentle in tone but could be upsetting for younger or sensitive viewers

Talk after watching

  • Sara asks Nelson to live fully for one month. What would you want to do differently if you only had a short time with someone?
  • Nelson changes how he treats work and people over the film. How do you know when it is time to slow down?
