Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16+ because the fights are unusually bloody and keep coming. Younger teens may find the gore hard to shake

Our take

A widowed man gains a machine-assisted fighting ability and goes after the people who attacked him. Upgrade makes the fights fast and strange, but broken bones, stabbings and gunshot wounds are shown close up. Grief and the loss of control over his own body add to the unease. We would wait until 16.

Uplifting themes

The film raises questions about leaning on technology and keeping control of your own body. The plot mostly rewards revenge, so any lesson needs a chat afterward Grey is devoted to his late wife and works hard to recover after his injury. His answer to harm is violence, so he is hard to hold up as an example for kids Gives a starting point for talking about artificial intelligence, assistive technology, and surveillance. It is an action thriller first and a lesson second

Story (may spoil tone)

A brutal mugging leaves Grey Trace paralyzed in the hospital and his beloved wife dead. A billionaire inventor soon offers Trace a cure — an artificial intelligence implant called STEM that will enhance his body. Now able to walk, Grey finds that he also has superhuman strength and agility — skills he uses to seek revenge against the thugs who destroyed his life.

Fast, brutal fights leave attackers with broken bones, stabbings, and gunshot wounds. The hero's body sometimes moves on its own, which makes the action feel strange and relentless. A wife is shot in a street attack early on

Strong swearing is frequent, with the f-word and s-word shouted during fights and arguments. Cruder insults and a-word jabs appear too. It rarely lets up once the revenge hunt starts

Characters drink beer and whiskey in a few scenes, including a bar visit during the hunt. One line about alcohol dulling the brain's signals works as a plot detail. Nobody is glamorised for drinking

A cold machine voice lives in the hero's head and takes over his body, which creeps in as body horror. Dark chases and sudden gunfire keep the tone tense. Some jolts come without warning

Gunshot and stab wounds, a hidden gun in a forearm, and bodies left behind are shown up close. Injuries linger on camera, and some blood spray is stylized but still heavy

Grey sinks into depression and isolation after his injury and the loss of his wife. Hearing a machine voice in his head adds confusion about who is really in control

His wife is killed in the first act, and her loss drives every choice he makes. Grief turns to rage fast, and the story gives little room for healing

  • Grey lets a machine take control of his body. When is it smart to trust technology, and when does it become risky?
  • How does grief push Grey toward revenge, and what else could he have done with his anger?
