Our take

The vampires in this flat bicker like housemates and spill a lot of blood while feeding. What We Do in the Shadows makes most of its scares into jokes, but the gore gags, sex talk and frequent f-words give it an adult edge. We would watch from M.

Uplifting themes

Friendship and acceptance carry the story as an odd group welcomes a newcomer into their home. Loyalty to each other matters more than their constant bickering The vampires are loyal friends who look out for one another. They are also bloodthirsty, lazy, and self-absorbed, so they are fun but not role models

Story (may spoil tone)

Vampire housemates try to cope with the complexities of modern life and show a newly turned hipster some of the perks of being undead.

Vampires feed on people, claw at throats and stage clumsy fights with comic timing. A werewolf brawl is the roughest stretch. The jokes soften the tone, but the attacks are bloody

The f-word and s-word are frequent, along with a-word insults, in kitchens, fights, and meetings. A few sexual swear words are tossed in as jokes. Most scenes have at least some of it

Crude sex jokes and flirting come up in banter, including a gag about a transformation and a short seduction scene. The humour stays playful, and nothing explicit is shown on screen

Characters drink wine and get drunk at a party, and some smoke outside. Drinking blood is the film's running gag and is shown with a straight face

Creepy vampire attacks, a ghostly jolt, and a few chases give brief scares. A joke usually follows right after to lighten things, so the fear passes quickly for most viewers

Blood splatters walls and furniture, and some victims are drained and dropped for laughs. A vampire burning in sunlight and a few torn bodies add to the mess
