Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 16+ because the sex scene, rear nudity, and the consent problem sit heavier than a light sci-fi romance

Our take

Two people wake decades too early on a spaceship, and Passengers turns their loneliness into a romance and a survival story. One person's choice takes away the other's consent, which needs a real conversation afterwards. There is a sex scene with brief nudity, drinking and some dangerous repair scenes. We would wait until 16.

Uplifting themes

The film is about love, honesty, and the cost of a selfish choice, and shows two people working together to save others. The central choice is a hard one and leaves plenty of room to debate Both leads are brave and resourceful when lives are on the line, though one has done something deeply wrong and has to live with it. Their teamwork under pressure is the best of them A light space-travel setting touches on hibernation and life aboard a ship. It is mostly a romance and an adventure, so there is only a small amount to learn

Story (may spoil tone)

A spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers are awakened 90 years early.

A robot bartender serves whiskey and wine, and characters drink when they are lonely or celebrating. One night out ends with a hangover joke, and the drinking is rarely treated as a problem

Hull damage, a sudden loss of gravity in a pool, a fiery ship failure, and long stretches alone in space are tense and loud. People are in serious danger more than once

One person makes a life-changing choice for the other without asking first, and that choice shapes the romance that follows. Nothing sexually violent is shown, but the consent issue is hard to miss for older teens

Long stretches of isolation lead to loneliness, low mood, and heavy drinking for one character. It is handled gently but can feel quite sad for sensitive viewers

The film touches on the loss of friends, family, and a whole world left behind, with a few quiet moments of sadness. It does not dwell on a single death

Talk after watching

  • One character makes a choice that changes another person's life without asking. What makes that so hard to forgive?
  • Both people are desperate for company in a very empty place. How do you think loneliness changes the way people act?
