Reign Over Me

Parents guide · ClearAge age 14+ · Official M

Movie 2007 124 min Drama Checked by Dan S · 16 Oct 2026
Official Rating M ClearAge 14+

Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 14+ because the swearing is frequent and the grief and suicidal themes are heavy. Most of the film is talk, so it suits older teens more than kids

Our take

A man tries to reconnect with an old friend who has withdrawn after losing his family on September 11. Reign Over Me is often quiet and moving, but grief sits under almost every scene, and a later crisis brings suicide into the story. Strong swearing and crude sex talk come up too. We would watch from 14, ready for a difficult conversation afterwards.

Uplifting themes

Friendship, listening, and slow healing are the core of the story. The film says it is okay to ask for help, to be patient with grief, and to let someone you love move at their own pace One friend patiently reaches out with kindness and no pressure, while the other is honest about his pain when he is ready. Both make poor choices at times, which keeps them human and believable Gives teens a way into talking about trauma, grief, the personal cost of September 11, and the value of therapy. It is a gentle starting point, though it does not try to teach the facts of that day

Story (may spoil tone)

A man who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate. Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief.

A road scene and the late stand-off feel tense, and a man's flashbacks and angry outbursts can be unsettling. The mood is more sad than scary, but the raw emotion can be a lot for sensitive viewers

Talk after watching

  • One friend stays shut inside his grief while the other keeps everyone at a distance too. How can you tell when someone needs help?
  • The film is gentle about therapy and friendship but never tidy. What did you think helped, and what did not?
