Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 8+ because the story leans on regret over a lost father and has some mild swearing and a brief scare. Younger children may find it slow

Our take

A farmer hears a voice and builds a baseball field in his cornfield, bringing long-lost players into his life. Field of Dreams is gentle, with mild language and a brief choking scare. Its deeper story is about a man's regret over his father. We would start around 8, even if some of that meaning lands later.

Uplifting themes

Second chances, forgiveness, and following your heart are central ideas. The film values family and making peace before it is too late, and it leaves viewers feeling hopeful and a little teary The lead is loyal, gentle, and a loving father and husband, and others help him follow a dream. Some characters make selfish choices before they grow A warm introduction to baseball history, with references to real players, plus a glimpse of 1960s protest and book debates. Older kids who like baseball may want to look up the real names afterwards

Story (may spoil tone)

Ray Kinsella is an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice telling him to turn his cornfield into a baseball diamond. He does, but the voice's directions don't stop -- even after the spirits of deceased ballplayers turn up to play.

Talk after watching

  • The farmer takes a big risk to follow his dream. What dream would you chase even if people laughed?
  • The film is really about a father and son who never made peace. What would you want to say to someone before it is too late?
