Our take

Convicted killers are made to fight for a live-streamed show in The Condemned. The violence is the attraction, with guns, blades, explosives and bloody beatings. An attempted sexual attack and constant strong swearing make it harder still. We would wait until 16, even though the film questions the audience's appetite for this spectacle.

Uplifting themes

The film points a finger at audiences who cheer on violence as entertainment, and a few characters show loyalty. The message is lost in the carnage Jack sometimes steps in for others and is shown as the toughest fighter, but he is still a convicted killer who solves problems with force. No one here is a clean role model

Story (may spoil tone)

Jack Conrad is awaiting the death penalty in a corrupt Central American prison. He is "purchased" by a wealthy television producer and taken to a desolate island where he must fight to the death against nine other condemned killers from all corners of the world, with freedom going to the sole survivor.
