Our take

A teenager joins the Marines after a serious mistake and falls for a young musician dealing with mental illness. Stateside is a love story with painful hospital scenes and family strain. There is steady swearing, underage drinking and a discreet sex scene. We would watch from US R.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty, growing up, and standing by someone who is unwell are the main ideas. The film is sympathetic to people living with mental illness Mark grows from a reckless teen into someone who takes responsibility, and a few Marines show him real care. Dori's courage in a hard situation stands out Gives a basic look at how mental illness affects a young person and the people around her. It is a drama first, so it works as a conversation starter more than a lesson

Talk after watching

  • Dori's illness changes how she acts and feels. What would you want a friend or partner to do if someone you loved was struggling like that?
  • Mark joins the Marines partly because of a mistake he made. Did the film show joining up as a fresh start or a way to run away?
