Our take

Three couples holiday together through the seasons, and the friendship gets less comfortable as their marriages change. The Four Seasons is mostly conversation: affairs, sex jokes, wine and the sort of argument that carries on long after dinner. There is a passing suicide remark, but no sustained violence. We would start at 13, when there is more to take from the relationships than the jokes alone.

Uplifting themes

The group argues, forgives, and tries again, showing that long friendships and marriages take work. Honesty, even when it stings, is valued over perfect appearances No one is flawless, but several adults eventually own their mistakes and reach for repair. Teen and young adult children push back when parents overstep, which models speaking up with care

Story (may spoil tone)

Three middle-aged wealthy couples take vacations together in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Along the way we are treated to mid-life, marital, parental and other crises.

Most threats are comic, like a prick from a houseplant or hyperbolic lines about being killed by relatives. One moment mentions blood on a leg after a silly injury, without graphic detail

Friends slip into the s-word when plans go wrong, alongside damn, hell, and p-word off in passing. It is not constant, but it is clearly adult dinner-table talk

The couples talk about affairs and their sex lives. One couple are heard having sex in the next room, and the friends go skinny dipping, with bare backsides visible. The film keeps the humour conversational, but it does show nudity

Wine and beer flow through every season, and one story beat mentions guests getting drunk on a balcony. Drinking is treated as part of these upscale holidays, with mild embarrassment

During a heated exchange, a character throws the word suicide into an insult about looking miserable. It is not a plot focus and no attempt is shown

Middle-aged parents describe feeling depressed when they look at a grown daughter or when they replay a painful memory. The film treats low mood as part of midlife strain, not as a medical storyline

Talk after watching

  • When these friends argue, they still show up for each other on the next trip. What keeps a friendship going after a betrayal?
  • Several couples hide problems behind polite dinner talk. How can you tell when someone needs help versus privacy?
