Our take

Spielberg's wartime farce is noisy and frantic: planes, guns and tanks turn California panic into slapstick. The jokes also include sexual innuendo and nudity. We would start at 13 for a teen who will understand the period setting and its stereotypes.

Uplifting themes

Under the noise, panic and prejudice look foolish. The film is still mostly spectacle, so the lesson is easy to miss A few civilians try to keep their heads while officers and neighbors spiral. Heroes are hard to find in this circus

Story (may spoil tone)

In the days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, panic grips California, where a military officer leads a mob chasing a Japanese sub.

Anti-aircraft guns, tanks, planes, and wild shootouts tear through neighborhoods in comic set pieces. People get knocked around and military hardware fires for laughs more than battlefield realism

Lots of damn, hell, the s-word, b-word, and son of a b-word fly during the chaos. The f-word is not the texture here, but the coarse talk is frequent

The romantic subplots bring kissing and plenty of innuendo. A home-release version also contains moderate nudity, so the sexual content goes beyond flirtation and jokes

Pearl Harbor panic, blackouts, and sudden gunfire keep the coast on edge. The tone stays goofy, so the scares play as mayhem

Suicide is mentioned in passing in dialogue during the wartime chaos. It is not shown on screen or turned into a detailed story beat

Wartime panic pushes racist talk about Japanese people and mob suspicion of anyone marked as the enemy. The film satirizes that hysteria, but the slurs are still on the soundtrack

Military guns and explosions dominate the slapstick. Blood and injury detail stay light compared with a straight war film

Talk after watching

  • Fear after Pearl Harbor makes neighbors turn on each other. How do you tell real danger from panic?
  • The film treats war prep as slapstick. Does laughing at wartime chaos make the history easier or harder to talk about?
