Why our age differs

Official is US PG. We say 8+ because there is loss and some peril, but the scary moments are brief and the story resolves warmly

Our take

Nikolas's journey is full of wonder, but it begins with the loss of his mother and takes him through chases and threats. The film usually brings the fear back down. The grief may matter more to a child than the fantasy creatures.

Uplifting themes

Kindness, truth-telling, and belief in better stories push the plot forward. The film argues that hope is a practice, not a prop Nikolas keeps helping others even when he is scared and cold. Allies who choose honesty over fear model the spirit the title promises The origin-of-Christmas framing can open talk about generosity and folklore. It is fantasy first, with a gentle nudge toward why giving matters

Story (may spoil tone)

Talk after watching

  • Nikolas keeps going even when adults say the elf village is a lie. When is it brave to hope, and when should you listen to caution?
  • Grief is named as the price of love in the story. How do you talk about missing someone at Christmas without rushing past the sad part?
