Why our age differs

Official is US PG. We say 12+ because a parent's illness and death sit at the heart of the story, beyond a soft beach romance

Our take

The Last Song is a sunny Southern romance that turns heavy when family illness and grief move to the centre. Teen kissing and summer flirtation run through the beach plot, with mild swearing and talk of picking up beer. A parent's failing health shapes the emotional second half. We land at US PG and up because the dying-parent story asks more of kids than a light teen crush film

Uplifting themes

Stubborn pride softens into care, and music becomes a bridge between father and daughter. Forgiveness and showing up for family are the clear takeaways Adults who stay patient and teens who finally risk honesty look better than the ones who only score points in a fight. Growth comes slowly and messily

Story (may spoil tone)

A drama centered on a rebellious girl who is sent to a Southern beach town for the summer to stay with her father. Through their mutual love of music, the estranged duo learn to reconnect.

Damn, hell, p-word, crap, and one clear b-word land in family arguments and teen sniping. The swearing stays occasional rather than a nonstop stream

Summer flirting and several kisses mark the teen romance on the beach. Nothing turns into an explicit sex scene, but the crush energy is front and centre

Friends talk about picking up beer for a gathering, and social drinking sits in the teen summer backdrop. It is casual, not a how-to or binge focus

A parent's serious illness and the shadow of death hang over the reconnection story. The film asks viewers to sit with goodbye, not only with first love

Talk after watching

  • Ronnie pushes her dad away for a long time before they rebuild trust. What helps when you are angry at someone you still love?
  • Music is how this family starts talking again. Is there a song or hobby that helps your house reconnect after a fight?
