Our take

Striking Distance is a hard-edged 1990s crime thriller about a demoted detective on river patrol while a killer stalks women linked to his past. Murders, guns, bodies in the water, and frequent strong language run through the film. Drinking and grief over family loss sit beside the case. We land at M and up because serial-killer dread and assault talk make it a tougher M-style watch

Uplifting themes

Pushing for the truth against a dirty system is the moral spark. Most of the film stays in revenge and suspicion rather than healing A partner who still cares tries to pull the hero back from the edge. Many officers model corruption, cruelty, or burnout

Story (may spoil tone)

Demoted Pittsburgh cop Tom Hardy works river patrol while a serial killer targets women from his past, forcing him to conduct an unauthorized investigation to prove his innocence and expose a dirty cop.

Funerals and talk of losing family on the river weigh on the detective. Grief explains his anger and isolation more than it becomes a quiet memorial story

Talk after watching

  • Police loyalty and cover-ups tangle the investigation. How should someone speak up when their own side looks dirty?
  • Grief and drinking weigh on the hero. What healthy ways can people cope after losing family?
