Sleeping with Other People is an adult comedy about two New Yorkers who keep wrecking relationships and then try to stay friends without sleeping together. The tone is chatty, bawdy, and often mean-funny. Strong language runs thick, mostly the f-word, with frank sex talk, porn jokes, and therapy and twelve-step language around sex addiction. We land at 17 and up because frequent explicit sex talk, sex scenes, and strong language make this a hard adult comedy
Uplifting themes
Under the raunch, the film argues that honesty and friendship can outlast reckless habits. Growth is messy and incomplete The leads are charming on the surface and often selfish underneath when desire wins. Moments of real care appear, yet they are not tidy role models for younger teens
Story (may spoil tone)
Can two serial cheaters get a second chance at love? After a one-night stand in college, New Yorkers Lainey and Jake meet by chance twelve years later and discover they each have the same problem: because of their monogamy-challenged ways, neither can maintain a relationship. Determined to stay friends despite their mutual attraction, they make a pact to keep it platonic, a deal that proves easier said than done.
