Red, White & Brass

Parents guide · ClearAge age 8+ · Official PG

Movie 2023 85 min Comedy, Family Checked by Dan S · 23 Oct 2026
Official Rating PG ClearAge 8+

Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 8+ because mild swearing and grown-up panic sit a notch above the softest PG cartoons, still fine for many primary kids with a parent

Our take

Red, White & Brass is a feel-good community comedy inspired by a true story: a rugby tragic promises a brass band he does not have, then races to invent one. Mild swearing (damn, hell, a couple of s-words) and family embarrassment provide the edge, not fights or scares. Culture, music, and belonging carry the night. We land at 8 and up because the humour and mild language fit a PG family watch with a parent nearby for the odd rough word

Uplifting themes

Community, honesty after a bad promise, and cultural pride carry the story. Music becomes a way to show up for each other under pressure Family and neighbours rally once the fib is out in the open. Maka grows from selfish fandom toward responsibility without losing his humour Kids get a cheerful window into Tongan family life and brass-band culture in New Zealand. Light learning wrapped in comedy, not a documentary

Story (may spoil tone)

Maka, a Tongan superfan, will do whatever it takes to get tickets to the Tonga v France Rugby World Cup game - even if that means promising to deliver a brass band for the pre-match entertainment. Only problem is, the band doesn't exist and Maka has four weeks to make one. Inspired by a true story.

Jokes and a dismissive fob dig land as community friction more than sustained hate. The film pushes back by celebrating Tongan pride and belonging

Talk after watching

  • Maka makes a huge promise he cannot keep yet. When is a white lie about to become a real problem for other people?
  • The band only works when the whole community shows up. What group effort have you been part of that felt bigger than one person?
