Our take

Sleeping Dogs is a dark crime thriller about an ex-homicide detective whose memory is fractured as he revisits an old murder tied to a man on death row. Frequent strong swearing, guns, talk of killings, and drug details including a fentanyl overdose run through the investigation. The mood stays tense and morally murky rather than flashy. We land at MA 15+ and up to match the restricted rating and the mix of language, crime violence, and heavy investigation themes

Uplifting themes

Pushing for the truth when memory fails still counts as a kind of responsibility. The film does not pretend the system is clean The detective keeps working the case despite gaps in his mind, and a few allies still show up for him. Trust stays complicated, and nobody looks clean for long

Story (may spoil tone)

Roy Freeman, an ex-homicide detective with a fractured memory, is forced to revisit a case he can't remember. As a man's life hangs in the balance on death row, Freeman must piece together the brutal evidence from a decade-old murder investigation, uncovering a sinister web of buried secrets and betrayals linking to his past. With only instincts to trust, he faces a chilling truth - sometimes, it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

Talk after watching

  • The detective has to trust scraps of memory and other people's stories. How do you decide who to believe when your own recall is shaky?
  • A life on death row hangs on what the case really meant. What would you want a parent to explain about punishment and doubt?
