Our take

The Roses is rated R for language, drug use, and sexual content. This satirical marriage drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as a couple whose perfect life curdles into bitter warfare. Dialogue includes constant f-word use, drinking, joint smoking, and repeated suicide references played for dark comedy. Adults only; the emotional cruelty hits hard

Story (may spoil tone)

Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy and Theo: successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the faΓ§ade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo's career nosedives while Ivy's own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.

Talk after watching

  • A couple competes to destroy each other politely. What makes conflict toxic in relationships?
  • Dark comedy treats pain as a joke. When does satire help or hurt?
