Why our age differs

Official is US R. We say 16+ because frequent strong language, sexual content, and glamourised mob killings make a harder watch than many lighter US R dramas

Our take

Bugsy is a glossy crime biopic about a charming, violent mobster building a gambling empire and a volatile romance in Hollywood. Expect frequent strong language, shootings and beatings, sexual content, smoking and drinking, and gambling as the whole business plan. An antisemitic slur and rape-as-insult dialogue also appear in heated scenes. We land at 16 and up because glamourised gangland violence and adult sexual content sit well past a soft teen crime story

Uplifting themes

Ambition and showmanship get screen time, but the film keeps showing the damage around them. Any uplift is thin beside the crime glamour Virginia Hill pushes back and stays sharp in a man's world. Most powerful men model charm paired with cruelty Parents get a stylised window into mid-century mob Hollywood and how Las Vegas was pitched as legitimate gambling. Treat it as mood history, not a textbook

Story (may spoil tone)

New York gangster Ben 'Bugsy' Siegel takes a brief business trip to Los Angeles. A sharp-dressing womanizer with a foul temper, Siegel doesn't hesitate to kill or maim anyone crossing him. In L.A. the life, the movies, and most of all strong-willed Virginia Hill detain him while his family wait back home. Then a trip to a run-down gambling joint at a spot in the desert known as Las Vegas gives him his big idea.

Casinos, illegal gambling joints, and the Las Vegas dream drive the whole story. Gambling is sold as destiny and big money, not a cautionary sidebar

Talk after watching

  • Bugsy sells a glamorous dream while hurting people around him. How do charm and ambition hide harm?
  • Building the casino is framed as vision. When does a big idea stop being worth the cost to others?
