Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 16+ because the f-word is nearly constant and race and sex jokes stay aggressive through the set

Our take

Chris Rock: Selective Outrage is a live stand-up special packed with adult jokes about race, sex, parenting, opioids, and the Oscars slap. The f-word and other strong swearing run almost nonstop, and racial slurs appear inside the comedy. There is no plot violence to speak of, but the language and sexual talk are hard-edged. We land at 16 and up because pervasive swearing and adult subject matter make this a hard adult comedy night for many families

Story (may spoil tone)

Chris Rock delivers an electric stand-up set on non-racist yoga pants, spoiling his kids, the Kardashians and his thoughts on the Will Smith fiasco.

The f-word flies almost nonstop, with the s-word, b-word, and other strong insults stacked through every bit. A racial slur also appears inside the comedy, so this is not mild adult banter

Racism, sexism, and who gets to claim harm are running themes in the set. Rock argues with celebrity race stories for laughs, which some teens will find sharp and others will find cruel

A bipolar joke lands inside a celebrity riff about who gets welcomed. Mental health is a punchline here, not a careful or caring story

Talk after watching

  • Rock jokes about what counts as racism and what does not. How do you tell a serious point from a punchline?
  • He talks about fame, parenting, and public conflict. Which jokes felt fair, and which felt mean?
