Our take

Dog follows an Army ranger and a hard-to-handle military dog on a Pacific Coast road trip toward a funeral. The tone mixes hangout comedy with grief, service trauma, and short bursts of chaos when the dog or humans lose patience. Swearing is frequent at a moderate level, with lots of the s-word, hell, damn, and b-word, and at least one f-word. Weed talk, sexual references, and PTSD threads sit beside the buddy-comedy bits. We land at 13 and up because the funeral weight and adult language fit teens who already watch grounded road movies

Uplifting themes

Showing up for someone, taking responsibility for a vulnerable animal, and admitting you are not fine all land as the trip's real point Briggs is flawed and often stubborn, yet he keeps trying to do right by the dog and his friend's family. Care arrives in imperfect packages

Story (may spoil tone)

Military past, door-kicking talk, and a tranquilizer shot sit inside the road-trip mess. The dog also snarls and lunges enough to keep people on edge without turning the film into a war movie

Briggs and the people he meets swear often: the s-word, hell, damn, b-word, and a-word show up across the drive. At least one f-word lands, but the film is heavier on blunt military banter than a constant f-word barrage

Adult talk includes sexual pleasure chatter and a later question about who slept with whom. There is no graphic sex scene; the references stay in dialogue

Weed smell and smoking jokes turn up on the road. Nothing becomes a how-to, but cannabis is treated as casual adult material

A few demonic-name jokes and sudden dog lunges give mild jumps along the highway. The bigger tension is emotional grief and trauma, not a horror film

A roadside argument brushes against hate-crime and racist-language accusations. It is a brief clash inside the trip, not the whole story

Service trauma, irritability, and talk of therapists run under the comedy. Both man and dog are clearly carrying damage that a joke cannot fully cover

The whole drive points toward a funeral for a fallen friend. Grief shapes plans, arguments, and quieter motel nights even when the banter gets loud

Talk after watching

  • The trip is really about saying goodbye to a friend. How do people in your family show grief without saying the soft words out loud?
  • Briggs keeps insisting he is fine while clearly carrying a lot. When is toughing it out helpful, and when is it just avoidance?
