Our take

A Shark Week science special rated US NR on Discovery and Max. CGI reconstructions and excited narration call ancient predators monsters and nightmare fuel. Mild language and predatory hunting talk show up, in an educational register rather than gory horror. Best for about US NR and up.

Uplifting themes

Marine biologists model curiosity and respect for ocean science A strong science focus covers fossil evidence, extinct shark species and modern research methods

Story (may spoil tone)

The special takes viewers deep into prehistoric waters to explore the ancient ancestors of today's sharks. Using animation, the episode highlights some of the most feared prehistoric ocean creatures, including the Dunkleosteus, the buzzsaw shark (Helicoprion), and the scissor-toothed shark (Edestus).

Talk after watching

  • How do scientists learn about animals that lived millions of years ago?
  • Words like monster and nightmare fuel can sound scarier than the science. What is actually on screen?
