Our take

Ryan Gosling plays a scientist racing to stop the sun from dying in this M film for thematic material and suggestive references. Space peril, dead crewmates, a gun scare, discussions of suicide and brief drug references appear. Language is moderate compared with action blockbusters. Strong teamwork and problem-solving themes may appeal to science-minded tweens with a parent, but extinction stakes and runtime make 12+ a safer bet.

Story (may spoil tone)

Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction.
