Our take

Ava searches for her husband after a military experiment brings the dead back. The MA 15+ covers strong violent content, language, gore and brief drug use. Daisy Ridley's film is a slow psychological grief story that critics say trailers oversold as action horror. Heavy swearing, smoke-filled battlefields and restrained on-screen violence sit under the sorrow. Mature teens who want emotional horror will get more from it than fans hunting a shoot-em-up zombie romp

Uplifting themes

Persistence, compassion and teamwork flicker through the bleak stretches. Endings stay bittersweet overall. Soft hope, not a pep talk for parents

Story (may spoil tone)

After a catastrophic military disaster reanimates the dead, Ava searches for her missing husband amidst an increasingly hostile world.

Attacks and a military disaster open the wound. Survivors shoot the undead and the backstory is ugly. Still less action-forward than a typical zombie shooter

People swear hard once the pressure lands on Ava's search. Frequent f-word runs through the journey. Harsh language is part of the stress of the road

A dead couple is found naked in a bathroom, with no genitalia shown on camera. Non-sexual corpse nudity. Brief, bleak, and easy to flinch at

Adults drink on screen, and one character snorts cocaine during the story. The R flags brief drug use for a reason. Alcohol sits alongside that beat

Undead dread and isolation weigh on Ava more than cheap jump scares ever could. Grief-horror mood. Quiet and heavy for long stretches of the film

Gore is part of the R and shows up in wound and corpse detail through Ava's search. Drama framing keeps it from feeling like fetish splatter. Still clear wounds on screen

Grief, obsession and trauma drive Ava's search for her husband. The journey is as much inside her head as on the road. That strain is the point

Searching for a lost spouse amid mass death is the whole story here. Mourning never leaves the frame at all. This is a grief film first and last

Talk after watching

  • Ava cannot accept that her husband may be gone. How does grief differ from denial?
  • Trailers promised action but the film is a drama. Why does marketing shape how scary a movie feels?
