Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 16 because suicide themes, possession, and hell horror make this a harder watch than most M fantasy

Our take

John Constantine hunts demons while helping a detective look into her twin sister's death, and the film goes deep into hell, possession, and suicide. Exorcisms, grotesque demons, and a trip through a nightmarish underworld keep the scare level high. Heavy smoking and sharp swearing come along too. We put this at 16, with a parent, because the suicide themes and hell imagery are heavier than a typical supernatural action film.

Uplifting themes

Under the gloom sits a thread about sacrifice, loyalty, and trying to tip the balance toward good. Sidekicks stick by Constantine even when he pushes them away. It is modest uplift inside a very dark film Angela keeps searching for truth for her sister, and Chas stays loyal when it would be easier to walk away. Flawed people still choose to help. Nobody is a clean-cut hero, but care shows up

Story (may spoil tone)

John Constantine has literally been to Hell and back. When he teams up with a policewoman to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister, their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles.

Demon fights, exorcisms, and deadly confrontations run through most of the film. Characters talk about murder and kill threats without soft edges. The action is frequent and often brutal in a supernatural way

The f-word shows up once, with regular s-word, a-word, hell, damn, and the b-word in tense exchanges. Swearing is steady without becoming a wall of strong language. Sensitive ears will still notice it

Constantine chain-smokes through almost every scene, and his lung disease is part of the story. There is also talk of drowning in alcohol in a grim aside. Smoking sits front and centre, not in the background

Frightening Strong Possession, winged demons, and a hellscape full of rotting bodies keep…

Possession, winged demons, and a hellscape full of rotting bodies keep the dread high. Jump moments and grotesque images hit with force, especially around the underworld visit. This is proper horror atmosphere, not mild spookiness

A sister's death is treated as suicide, and Constantine's own past attempt is discussed plainly. Desperate talk about ending a life returns late in the film. The theme is central, so plan a talk if that topic is raw at home

A little girl is possessed and put through a rough exorcism early on, which is scary to watch. Adults struggle to protect her while the demon fights back. It is brief but intense for families with younger kids

You get strong language in key scenes, including Hell shows corpses, wounds, and ugly injury detail, and there is talk of eyes gouged and near-decapitation. Spears, holy weapons, and bloody relics. Blood and body horror are clear without lingering forever

Isabel's psychiatric hospital stay and visions sit at the heart of the mystery. Constantine carries guilt, illness, and a bleak outlook that colours every choice. Mental distress is woven into the plot, not a side note

Angela fights for a proper funeral and cannot shake the loss of her twin. Mourning drives her toward Constantine and the occult world. The grief feels raw and stays with the story

Talk after watching

  • Constantine keeps trying to balance the scales for past mistakes. What does redemption mean when you cannot undo the harm?
  • Angela refuses to accept the official story about her sister. When is it right to keep digging even if the answers hurt?
