Our take

This hour-long 1940s Universal horror moves the mummy to a Louisiana swamp and leans on spooky atmosphere. Kharis strangles victims in the shadows, and there is a well-known, grotesque scene of a woman rising from the mud as a corpse. There is no blood, swearing, or sex, just creeping dread and some dated spooky-bayou tone. It is mild for teen monster fans and fine for curious kids about 10 and up with a parent.

Uplifting themes

A swamp-draining crew and a doctor try to protect a frightened woman and stop the killings. The positives are slim and dated, but there is some teamwork and care to note A couple of level-headed characters look out for the woman in danger and keep their nerve. They are thinly drawn, though their decency stands out against the fear around them

Story (may spoil tone)

After being buried in quicksand for the past 25 years, Kharis is set free to roam the rural bayous of Louisiana, as is the soul of his beloved Princess Ananka, still housed in the body of Amina Mansouri, who seeks help and protection at a swamp draining project.

Kharis rises from the swamp and strangles those who cross him, and frightened locals trade talk of a string of killings. The violence is central to the plot but bloodless and staged in shadow. One order to kill is shouted outright

A man is assumed to have gone off and gotten drunk at the local cafe, and adults drink in passing. It is minor background colour with no real focus

A mud-caked mummy drags himself out of the swamp, and a woman rises from the bog as a withered corpse in the film's signature shock. The haunted-bayou setting, the stalking and the grotesque make-up can frighten younger kids. The uneasy mood holds across the hour

People are found murdered and a few bodies show up through the story, but wounds and blood stay off screen. The horror comes from the grotesque mummy make-up, not injury detail
