Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We land a little higher at 17 because the strong language almost never stops and the drug use and crude sexual jokes are constant

Our take

This is a hard adult buddy comedy about a man who never grew up and the crude talking teddy bear he has kept since childhood. The jokes run on constant strong swearing, weed and cocaine gags, heavy drinking, and blunt sexual humour, some of it deliberately tasteless. There is comic brawling and a kidnapping stretch, but the real content is the wall-to-wall grown-up material. It sits alongside late-night stand-up more than anything made for kids. Teens will want it, yet it is written squarely for adults

Uplifting themes

Under the crude jokes there is a story about growing up, taking responsibility, and choosing the people who truly matter. It is a slim message buried in a lot of noise, but it is there The leads are affectionate but immature, and they mostly learn their lessons the hard way. There are no real role models to point to, just flawed friends who eventually sort themselves out

Story (may spoil tone)

John Bennett, a man whose childhood wish of bringing his teddy bear to life came true, now must decide between keeping the relationship with the bear or his girlfriend, Lori.

Most of the fighting is played for laughs, including a long, messy brawl between John and the bear that wrecks a hotel room. A late kidnapping brings some real threat and a bit of gunfire. It lands rough but comic

The swearing is almost non-stop, built around a constant f-word and heavy use of the s-word, plus plenty of crude name-calling. It is one of the loudest-mouthed comedies around. This is easily the biggest flag here

There is no real nudity, but the sexual talk is thick and often crude, with a prostitute gag, porn references, and lots of blunt bedroom humour. A few jokes treat assault as a punchline. It is adult-level raunch

Weed smoking is a running habit for the lead and his bear, shown casually and often. There are cocaine references, a drug-dealer bit, and plenty of heavy drinking. Substances are part of the comedy's furniture

A late kidnapping subplot puts the bear in danger and raises the stakes for a stretch. The tone stays comic even then, so the worry is mild and short-lived

Some of the humour leans on crude stereotypes and insults aimed at race, gender, and sexuality, usually as throwaway shock jokes. It is tossed off for laughs, and it stays coarse

The climax brings rougher slapstick, with the bear torn and later patched back together, plus brief gunfire. Blood is minimal and cartoonish. It is more mess than gore

Talk after watching

  • Ted leans on shock jokes about drugs, sex, and more. Which gags felt funny to you, and which just felt mean?
  • John keeps choosing the bear over growing up. How do you know when a friendship is holding you back?
