Why our age differs

Official is PG. We land at 7 because of a casino and gambling thread plus near constant chase action and a genuinely menacing hunter. There is no blood and the laughs keep it light.

Our take

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted sends Alex and his friends across Europe with a travelling circus while an animal-control officer pursues them. Chases, crashes, and a villain who wants Alex as a trophy bring lively cartoon danger. A casino caper and a few drinking and romance jokes add a cheeky edge, but no one is seriously hurt. We put it at around 7 and up, with a parent nearby for younger children during the chases.

Uplifting themes

Under the chaos, the film is about friendship, loyalty and building a found family where everyone belongs. The circus crew learns to dream big and work as a team The four friends stick together through every setback and welcome the circus misfits as their own. They model teamwork and second chances, even when they bicker

Story (may spoil tone)

Animal pals Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria are still trying to make it back to New York's Central Park Zoo. They are forced to take a detour to Europe to find the penguins and chimps who broke the bank at a Monte Carlo casino. When French animal-control officer Capitaine Chantel DuBois picks up their scent, Alex and company are forced to hide out in a traveling circus.

The film is one long cartoon chase, with a dogged officer firing tranquilliser darts, vehicle crashes, explosions and circus stunts. It is all slapstick with no blood, but the action rarely lets up and the villain plays rough

Romance is light and silly, with a giraffe and hippo couple trading affection and Alex falling for a circus jaguar. A quick in the nude gag is the raciest it gets

Captain DuBois hunts Alex and wants his head as a trophy. Her loud, relentless chases are comic overall but may frighten younger children

A Monte Carlo casino figures in the gang's European detour, with a gambling spree and a break-in. The sequence plays as a comic caper rather than a lesson in betting
