Official is G. We land at 6 because the wizard villain and the loud chase scenes can rattle the youngest, even though nothing is harsh

Our take

The Smurfs mixes animated Smurfs with live action in New York. A loud wizard, slapstick chases, and a few mild jokes aimed at adults make up most of the content to weigh. There is little real danger or strong language. We put it at around 6 and up, with a parent nearby for younger children who may find the villain noisy.

Uplifting themes

Teamwork, loyalty, and never giving up on family run right through the adventure, and the Smurfs win by sticking together. A new dad also learns to make time for his own child. There is a warm, simple message for younger kids The Smurfs look out for one another and welcome a lost human family, modelling kindness and courage in small ways. Gargamel is a clear, cartoonish baddie. Little viewers get easy heroes to root for

Story (may spoil tone)

When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Gargamel chases the tiny Smurfs with slapstick menace, and there are falls, bumps, and comic scuffles across New York. Nobody is seriously hurt and the tone stays silly. Small children may still flinch at the close calls

Language is very mild, with the Smurfs swapping in their own name for anything stronger and a few cheeky grown-up asides. There is nothing coarse. Parents of little ones will barely notice

Romance is limited to light flirting and a couple of kiss gags, including a playful pop-song parody about kissing a Smurf. It is innocent and quickly done. Nothing lingers or turns suggestive

Gargamel and his cat pursue the Smurfs through a few loud chases. The villain may unsettle very young children, but the scares stay comic and pass quickly

  • Gargamel is a classic cartoon villain. What makes a bad guy funny instead of scary for your child?
