Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is colourful and musical, but its humour can be cold. Children on the factory tour fall into dangerous machinery and chutes, face a squirrel attack, and are stretched or shrunk as jokes. There is no sexual content and almost no swearing. We put it at around 9 and up, with a parent nearby for the children's peril and unsettling consequences.
Uplifting themes
Charlie stays kind and honest when everyone else grabs, and the film sides with a close, poor family over winning at all costs. Sharing a cabbage-water dinner still looks like love. Humility is the prize Charlie and his family are warm, patient, and loyal, even when they have almost nothing. Wonka is a mixed bag: generous in the end, chilly along the way. Kids have a clear good example in Charlie There is playful talk of inventing sweets and of what happens when you cannot stop grabbing. It is a fable about greed more than a science lesson. Families can still unpack why Charlie is the one who lasts

Factory mishaps send children into a chocolate river, a chute, and a room of snapping squirrels. Wonka barely flinches while parents panic. It plays as dark comedy, but the scuffles and falls are still on screen

Grandpa Joe lets out a mild hell when hope flickers, and Pop quickly checks him. That is the strongest word in a family film. Talk is otherwise gentle

Dim tunnels, a furnace, Violet's transformation, and the squirrel attack make the factory unsettling beneath its colour. The squirrels may be the sharpest scare for younger children

Children on the factory tour are trapped, shrunk, or carried away in frightening mishaps while adults panic and songs mock them. Charlie is also poor and hungry before winning his ticket

The other winners are rude, vain, and cruel, and they sneer at Charlie's patched coat. Wonka's songs also pile on each child's flaw. Meanness is the joke, and some kids will feel it

Kids sneak sweets, ignore warnings, and jump into rivers of candy because it looks fun. The film punishes that, but the images still look like dares. A younger child might copy the grabbing and gorging

Augustus is mocked for eating, and Violet's swollen body becomes a public joke. Children sensitive to comments about weight may find the humour hurtful

Wonka is brilliant and also cut off from people, still stuck on a painful split from his father. Flashbacks show a lonely childhood behind the jokes. It is odd and sad more than it is a health lesson
