Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 11+ because the crude rant and slapstick sit in a family Christmas comedy, not a hard teen film.

Our take

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation follows a father whose plans for a perfect holiday keep going wrong. Slapstick mishaps, a roof climb, a squirrel, and a comic kidnapping build the chaos. There is a strong-word rant, drinking, and a sexualised Santa daydream. We put it at around 11 and up for families comfortable with its sharper jokes.

Uplifting themes

Under the disasters, Clark is trying to gather three generations for one kind evening. Family still shows up. The win is being together, even when the turkey and the lights fail Ellen keeps a somewhat cooler head, and the kids love their dad even when he spirals. Clark's temper and the kidnapping gag are the opposite of a model. Talk about apologising after a blow-up A light door into how families handle money stress, house guests, and holiday pressure. It is a gag machine first. The useful chat is about expectations, not history or skill

Story (may spoil tone)

It's Christmastime, and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration. But things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen, and their two kids. Clark's continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests, but he manages to keep going, knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon.

Slapstick piles up: a squirrel in the living room, a saw kicking back, a dog causing mayhem, and a comic raid when Clark snaps at his boss. People get bumped and startled. It is cartoon pain, not a fight film

Clark's bonus rant is a long string of insults, and the s-word, hell, damn, and crude names fly when plans collapse. Relatives add bathroom jokes. It is a holiday comedy with a properly angry mouth on it

Clark drifts into a catalogue daydream of a woman in a sexy Santa outfit, and there is kissing plus innuendo among the grown-ups. Nobody is stripped for a sex scene. The jokes are 1980s cheeky, aimed over younger heads

Eggnog, beer, and Christmas pours sit on the table through the family gathering. Adults drink while they argue and celebrate. Nobody is teaching kids how to get drunk, but the glasses keep appearing

A squirrel tearing through the house, exploding decorations, and a sudden armed response at the climax can jolt younger viewers. It still plays as comedy. Sensitive kids may cover their eyes for the animal chaos

The Griswold kids are in the car, the attic, and the living room while trees, lights, and relatives go wrong. They look alarmed, then bounce back. The danger is slapstick, and adults are nearby the whole time

Clark climbs an icy roof and handles elaborate electrical decorations. The stunts are comic, but children should not copy them
